Born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, Randall spent much of his childhood exploring the outdoors—hunting in the swamps of south Alabama, fishing from the pier on Dauphin Island, and paddling a canoe through the rivers and creeks of Mobile and Baldwin County. School was never his greatest interest, but by the grace of God, he graduated high school and went on to Auburn University, where he studied industrial design.
His love for art began early. In the third grade, a teacher asked him to draw a house on the blackboard. Instead of the expected flat front view, Randall sketched a house in perspective—the way he saw it in his mind. That moment planted the seed for his lifelong passion for drawing and visual expression.
Randall went on to spend his career as a professor of industrial design at Auburn University, where he taught and designed products for mass production. In the world of product design, sketching is essential, and he often reminded his students that drawing is not just about representation, but about problem-solving and communication.
Although teaching left little time for personal painting, Randall’s interest was rekindled in the fall of 2014. Late nights in the studio soon reignited his passion for watercolor. Drawn to its fluid, unpredictable beauty, he began experimenting with techniques and styles, often returning to the subjects that had inspired him since childhood—landscapes of lakes, rivers, streams, and seascapes.
Now painting full-time, Randall continues to explore the delicate balance of light, color, and atmosphere that watercolor uniquely captures. His work reflects not only places he knows and loves, but also the deep connection between memory, experience, and the natural world.
